Help! I have just inherited a Lane Cedar Chest and piano that have spent the last 30 years in a cigarette smoke infested house. It smells awful! How can I get rid of the smell and clean them up without damaging the finish? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

I don't know a surefire solution for this, although I do know that there are people who are knowledgable on this specific subject. However, I dated a flight attendant once who told me they used to put ground coffee (fresh) on anything that smelled and when the cleaning crew vacuumed it up the smell went with it. You might try this on the inside of the cedar chest, and then run you ROS over the cedar to 'refresh' the good smells.
Try baking soda. Open the box top all the way and place it inside the chest. The outside .... dunno.
Works for refridgerators, anyway.

Don't know about the smell, but this could be more important: http://www.babybag.com/cpsc/f96186.htm
This may help .Years ago I went on vacation for 3wks in the summer and the fridge circuit blew . I came home to the smell of death, freezer full of meat.I tried everything, soda ,tomato juice ,out in the sun for a week with no door, the garden hose, no luck.On the street one day I spotted an appliance guy.I said HELP !He roared with laughter and told me this . First buy a fresh newspaper every 2nd day ,rumple up each page and stuff the fridge and freezer leave it running to circulate the air .Change the paper every 2nd day .Papers have to be new to absorb the smell. Do this for ten days. Then go to the supermarket and get a pound of coffee beans ,grind them fine yourself spread them on a cookie sheet and put in the top of the fridge not above in the freezer leave it running to circulate the air for a week, stir the grounds every 2days. It worked for me !!!!! He said if there was any slight smell left that the hardware store sold a product called Ozonite that would eliminate the rest .I did not need it and have never seen it for sale .Maybe somewhere in this you can adapt the methodology to your situation. If nothing else have a chuckle at my frugality!
Sir; When my wife & I smoked( years & years ago)we would do spring cleaning & wash walls & ceiling with with a warm water, soap & washing soda. The water smelled & reeked of cig.smoke. Washing soda is a laundry product, found in most large grocery stores, and it's cheap too. A table spoon in a bucket of water will do it,but change the water often.
Good luck
You may want to try using some charcoal that you cook out with.
There is a powdered product that's specifically designed for eliminating smoke odor, but the name's eluding me. I used it in a couple of dressers I bought years ago that had been used to store smoke-tainted clothes in. If the name comes back, I'll re-post, but it would be found in the same area that air fresheners are in, if the store carries it.

Hello,
I used to be in the fire/water restoration biz. Call around and ask dry cleaners if they have an ozone generator. This machine makes ozone (which is poison) and will get rid of the smoke smell in furniture and clothes. You can wash the cedar chest with an orange oil product to get rid of the film. I have cleaned furniture that I thought was light yellow. It was actually white. The company I worked for was called Steamatic. The machines are pretty common in the fire/water restoration business. Some dry cleaners will put the articles to be cleaned in a room and turn the machine on for about 24 hours. It was neat when we did a whole house. The ozone killed all the roaches, mice, ect. I hope this helps.
