trying to find some small metal mending plates and braces- 1 inch or so. hardware stores seem to have only bigger stuff.

The better stocked hardware stores carry National, Stanley brackets etc and they do make some smaller ones. Ask to look in the catalog to see what else is available. On the other hand you can cut something down or buy some angle aluminum or steel and cut and drill exctly what you want.

Buy some 3/4 angle and make your own or take some of the small straight mending plates and bend them up. It's so simple. Until you find a commercial source just wing it. Aluminum and brass will cut on a table saw. Steel can be cut many different inexpensive ways.
