I am interested in a small router plane (~Stanley 271). Both Lee Valley and Lie-Nielsen have recently introduced models. The LV is smaller, and perhaps simpler than the LN. I am thinking to use the tool mainly for paring out hinge and lock mortises.
Both planes received good reviews, but I haven’t seen any comparisons of the two. Any insights?

In short, the LN is an open throat, the LV is closed like the 271. For hinge work, I would recommend a closed throat--but with care, an open throat can be kept level. I think the in-front of cutter viewing on the LV is a bit better.
They are close enough in size that I wouldn't let that be a decisding factor. They also work identically well sans the way the blades are held. In that regard the LV is different than the LN/Stanley models.
Take care, Mike
I doubt there is much difference. They are primarily a clean up tool. You will be limited to the size of the mortice since the plane bottom has to make contact on the surface. They can be used to clean up the corners in a stopped dado or leveling small areas for inlay work. You will find difficulty using them on large hinge gains and the blade may be too far forward for smaller ones. Some will add a larger wooden base so you have more bearing surface. They seem to be more useful for cleaning up close to corners and edges after a router/chisel has removed the bulk of the waste.

Hi Glaucon
My review of the LV compared it with the Stanley #271. At that time I had not handled or even had access to the LN. I have since played a bit with the LN, but not enough to form any conclusions. Here is my review of the LV. I hope it helps ..

Thanks all, I appreciate the points. Derek, I had read your review of the LV. I realize that you've not had enough time to say anything definitive about the LN, but do you have any preliminary observations/comparisons? Any thoughts about Mike's point of open vs closed design?Glaucon

Hi Glaucon
I agree with Mike's conclusion that a closed mouth is better than an open mouth on hinge mortices. Simply put, there is greater registration and support.
Here is the hinge mortice segment from my review ..

.. and here is the LN (from their website - looks more like cutting a rebate) ...

Hope this helps.
