I have a motor that I want to turn into a slot mortiser. The motor has a 1/2″ straight shaft that I want to put a chuck on to. I have only been able to find chucks that require a tapered shaft. Any suggestions?

Shopsmith has a chuck that might work, I think it is a 5/8 inch fit but you might be able to sleeve the shaft of the motor. It is a jacobs chuck though so I don't know how it will handle a side load that you would have with a slot morticer

I think I bought a threaded one from MSC INdustrial about ten years ago. Can't remember if it was a left hand or right hand thread though. Then again it may have been McMaster Carr.
Robin,
Where do you live? I've got a Grizzly horizontal boring machine that a lot of people are using for a slot mortiser. It's not too expensive, and I'm selling mine...

Why are you selling yours? Did you replace it with something you like betta? I almost bought one 6 months ago, but I was not to sure of its strong and week points, so I bought a bench top mortise machine.

Morgan,
I bought a Domino. It is ideal for about 90% of the type of work I do - and does it fast and well.
The other 10%, larger mortises, I can do with a plunge router.
I need the shop space more than I need another stand-alone machine...
It works well enough, but in my situation I just went with something more compact and portable.
