I am making a mesquite and slate table top. It will be 30″ round and the outside will have a mesquite band 3 1/2 ” wide. The next circle will be slate. The following circle will be mesquite and slate triangles and the inside is a round piece of mesquite. What is the best way to glue the mesquite and slate. There will be a plywood base. I know there is no problem gluing the mesquite to the plywood, but what about the slate. I could screw cement board to the plywood for the slate, but can I glue the mesquite directly to the cement board?
If yes, is there a certain type of glue I should use? I will use a colored sanded grout for the approximately 1/2″ gaps.

Hi,
I'm not sure why this ended up in my mailbox. I have no experience with cement board. Not much call for it in my furniture.
I do however think that gluing your mesquite down to plywood or cement board will end in failure. Particularly if you use flat sawn lumber over 3" in width, it will experience moisture changes throughout the year, maybe throughout the day. As it gains and loses moisture, it will want to move. Glued to a plywood substrate might work for awhile, but if the pieces have any thickness at all, that is anything over 1/8", you will eventually see them crack or pull away from the plywood. Wood is not cement or stone. It will continue to move with the moisture in the air.
Just my two cents on this. I would connect with Fine Homebuilding and one of their experts on this. Good luck. Gary
