Darn!
I’m doing something wrong in Sketchup that prevents me from re-designing my kitchen remodel – yep, re-designing – computer crashed, backup was corrupted, file lost. Wahhhhh! (got THAT out of my system).
The problem is that something in my procedure renders Sketchup fhahachta! at some point.
Here’s what I’m doing – somebody please set me straight.
– Drew the bare room floorplan in 2D, top view, to scale.
– Changed to 3D, perspective, and individually raised 3 walls – kept them 1 dimensional to simplify things
– Pierced the walls (from inside the room) with doors and windows to scale and dressed with trim. Attempted to make each of these doors and windows “components” with limited success.
-Individually made the floor into a “group”, and then each separate wall a “group” in order keep the cabinets-to-come from “sticking”, i.e., from sharing a surface with the walls and floor and thus becoming part of the walls and floor. (I’m imagining that this is a strategy for allowing me to more easily make the individual boxes into components that I can move about and edit at will.)
At this point, Sketchup goes fhahachta. It will allow me to start a box to create a cabinet box on one wall, but will not allow me to start a box (or a line, for that matter)on either of the other two walls or the floor.??????? I can’t draw the cabinet boxes in.
“Exploding” (undoing) the various groups does not fix this problem.
Starting over with a fresh file and repeating the above proceedure – surprise – results in the same crash.
Clearly I’m all screwed up. Can anyone help me sort this out?

Mike D

Never mind.
I just tried it again without all the fussy, obsessive/compulsive measuring and a zillion construction lines, and it worked fine. Time to turn off the computer and get some sleep!

Mike,
Let me know if you have more problems and I'll help you get it sorted out. If you send me the SKP file, I can probably see what was giving you fits.
"fhahachta"? That's a good word. What language does it come from? ;)
Dave
Hi Dave,
I'm not sure what language it is. My old neighbor was Slavic and swore that it wasn't a bad word - said it meant broken! with an exclamation point.
Mike
P.S. I think that I figured out the problem with the model - I was pretty clumsy making the window's and doors and got so many surfaces going in a small area that Sketchup struggled to determine what to show. If I keep getting tangled up in it, I'll send you the file - otherwise I don't want to waste your time. Thanks, though.
Mike
Slavic, huh? Well, I'm going to file that one away. It is sure to come in handy one of these days.
Do keep an eye on all that unneeded geometry and stuff. Delete unneeded guidelines frequently and also purge unused components, materials and so on. That should help. All that excess stuff can certainly cause your video card to struggle. Whatever you do, don't let the magic smoke out. ;)
