I am planning to build a small kitchen table mounted on a pedestal. What would be the proper span for the feet? The table would be 34″ square and 29″ high with 4 feet at right angles to each other. Right now I have drawn it up with a span of 25″ but I am not sure if that is enough support to keep it from tipping. Are there any rules of thumb to apply?

Your plan entails 4.5" of overhang on each side, which is fine. I've built tables with 8" or less, depending on the weight of the top v. legs, and whether they're round tops or square/rectangle.
Should be fine.

I, too, would think the amount of overhang you have planned would be fine for adults. A 40-pound kid leaning on the edge might be an issue if the leg:top weight ratio is top heavy, though.
Thanks for the conformation for the table leg design. Now I feel better about going ahead with the table.
