Greetings and Salutations
A late introduction…I entered this forum during the last “transition” and arrived frayed and
confused in the aftermath.I mostly lurk…to unwind after a day’s trials but I also hit and run
quite a bit…that would be -throw out my latest problem/challenge, take the answers and run
with it. I learned on one of my first posts the limit of my knowledge. I was blown away
by where that discussion went after my post and I learned something new;in fact my mind
went to a new place like a leaf I had never turned over. Like I said
in one of my last posts to woodwiz-have any idea how many bars I would have visit to get an
answer to my question? thousands. His reply-could be fun…if someone else was buying.
I am a huge fan of Knots and Breaktime and occasionally post…but mostly I learn and what a treat that is…
About myself? I live in northwestern Ontario but I’m an expat from Massachusetts.
Started in 1970 as a carpenter’s helper and carpentry night school. That was also the year I
graduated from high school, got married the first time and had my first child. Now my baby of
4 kids is going on fifteen. Lot’s of water over the bridge,my hammer has seen lots of hot
suppers and I got lots of gray hair and whiskers(that’s the silver part) I served an
apprenticeship as a carpenter and a cabinet maker so in my grander moods, I call myself a
carpentry and woodworking entrepreneur.I make money building houses, kitchens,
conference tables, podiums , handrails, remodeling older homes and any thing else that finds
me, requires some finess and I figure I can make a buck at. I also have been teaching
woodworking, carpentry and related homebuilding arts at the local college for the past 11
years and most of the time I love teaching. It feels good to give something back to the trade
and it’s always cool to inspire someone else.
Just wanted to take a moment to say hi…never did like talking to folks in a room without
introducing myself.
cheers,
hihosilver

"and arrived frayed and confused in the aftermath." Boy, does that bring back memories! Too funny. Thanks for coming out on stage and introducing yourself, Silver. Sounds like you'll be able to help us novices out quite a bit. There seems to be quite a contingent from the east side of Canada! How did you manage to move to Canada?

forestgirl,
"How did you manage to move to Canada? "
Kind of a long story...met my lady in Toronto while on a trip with some friends. She later moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario to be part of a community we both were connected to. I hitched to Thunder Bay from Tucson, Arizona after receiving a fateful letter suggesting we should get together...the rest, like they say, is history.
That was 1980...we now have 3 kids,a minivan, a house she designed and we built together. She is also part of the business. She's an incredible designer and she also does all the finishing and wood turning. I like to say I taught her all she knows but she mostly picked it up on her own.
cheers,
silver
Silver,
Welcome. The world needs more dedicated teachers, tradesmen and craftsmen. As a technological society, we are quickly quickly changing our concepts of what is real and useful and in this transition we are losing an appreciation of the intrinsic value of creating something of utility and beauty from nature's gifts with care and skill. I look forward to your contributions.
Doug
