Hello
I Have an old 8 ft section of a shuffle board game consisting of multiple planks of hard rock maple 3″ X 1″. It has several screw bars through it holding it togethere.
I was thinking of removing them to plane the wood & scrape them clean, then replace them with new ones and use this for the top of a work bench.
how would you sugest I do this? as the old screws are damaged at bothends but must be removed?
I hate to waste wood, And sooo
Please respond to [email protected]
as well
thank you

Mark,
A few questions:
The top is 3" thick or 1" thick and are the "screws" along both long edges with the screw heads directly across from each other? Are sure they are screw heads, or are they, as is commonly done, nuts on threaded rods that go all the way across to the opposite edge?
Describe the damage to the screw heads, and describe what they look like. Are they recessed into the edge? A photo or two would be very helpful.

Hello John
thank you for answering my call
this is 1" on top 3" down held together by threaded rods nuts are gone but
the ends have been beaten down to stop boards from coming off, to the extent that the ends are actually recessed. Thus end treads are hopelessly damaged.
Do you think I have to make a sacrificed board at each end?
Camera is broken sorry

A few possibilities:If the top is tight at the seams, leave the rods alone and add new edge strips to cover the damage. A cabinet scraper can be used to smooth and flatten the top without taking it apart.Saw into the rods on one side with a jig saw, reciprocal saw, or a Skil saw with a nail cutting blade. Once an end is off each rod you should be able to pull them out.John W.
