Hi Ben: Visited Bahia a few years ago and went by a lumber yard. all they had to show was dark brownish-red wood that looked like mahogony. You must be hard up for that good north american stuff. What other kinds of wood are available there at the local lumber store. Sounds like you got a real nice place to make dust.
woodcrazy,
yeah, plenty of wood to choose from. a few months ago a salesman wanted to show me a good construction grade wood that he'd sell for $200/cubic meter. what did it turn out to be? Purpleheart. The list goes on and on--there are so many woods. Surprisingly, though, good mahogany is hard to find. Foreign buyers pay a higher price, plus there are more and more restrictions, and a lot of dealers have given up on mahogany. That's a change that's come about in the last three years. But there are others. I love going to the yard, climbing around on precarious stacks of lumber, and looking for just the right boards. It's almost my favorite part. Haven't been to Bahia yet, but I need to go. Ben
