My wife asked me what I want for Xmas. I was thinking it would be nice to have a stereo in my shop. I have poor radio reception, so an ipod connection is a must. Ideally it would have detachable speakers that could be mounted on the wall or on a shelf. And a remote control would be great. I want something that can stand up well to dirt, dust, sawdust. I am not one of those audiophiles looking for superb frequency response. Any ideas?

Passes my "rating" any way
My idea of a portable stereo:
Receiver that has iPad connectability : This is the newer equivalent of what is in the photo ( I have this exact one in the house upstairs ). Be warned it is one surprisingly large box. When I ordered it I thought it was about a third as big as it is. Be sure to see the dimensions so you don't get an elephant in your shop by surprise as I did. Sounds good though.

The receiver comes with a basic cable for the iPad but to spif it up a bit I added this doc and cable; a bit pricy, has video capable cabling in the set.

These speakers are close to what I have ( the ones in the pic are Onkios that I have had for a hundred years.

You can't see it in the photo but the top speakers have big old barn door handles screwed to the top of both speakers. i have been known to get really into it and set the speakers further apart or even carry them into another part of the house with long speaker wires attached.
And lets not forget my big bad boy (is close to seventy pounds in weight !) ( Amazon had him on sale for two hundred dollars and I pounced ) I listen to classical a lot and it makes the cello violins, base violins and of course kettle dumbs etc., come alive ! ! ! I turn the base down for most other music. I don't care for the obnoxious droning monotony of the boom car boys music.

I have one of these but the 140. I have had great luck with Apple referbs (knock on wood )

And finally I stuffed it all in a second hand restaurant cart that some nice person just gave to me.
When I am getting crazy with saw dust I throw a pillow case over the receiver louvers and then wash it later.
I realize most people would mount all this on the wall up high and get it out of the floor but I am not that cool yet and I am into hearing the speakers a bit closer to the ear right now.
If you want simple and sounds good I use this one at my day job

Shop Stereo
I have this in my shop. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MHC-EC69i-Hi-Fi-System-Integrated/dp/B001RB1XJS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1290878847&sr=8-5 Use it almost always with the IPOD dock. Remote is nice. Good sound. I separated the speakers by adding some speaker wire and put them above the cabinets on the wall. It has been exposed to a lot of dust over the past year and no problems so far.
Best thing I did in the shop was to hook up some old floor speakers, wall mounted, to a decent receiver. The sound quality is a pleasure at any volume and you can hook up all kinds of sources. I also get Sirius radio, TV in addition to my iPod, CD player, might even be able to use an 8 track. I'm in the shop almost everyday, any source gets boring in short time, the more, the better. Can't say dust, dirt, paint, snow, concrete, rain, etc. have bothered any of my old job site boomboxes. It sure is nice not to have to listen to something that sounds like a tin can. You can find used stuff at garage sales, Ebay, etc. for very little money. Not much for a Christmas present but you could always ask for iTunes gift certificates.
shor-rated stereo
thanks for all the ideas. i guess i just need to do some shopping...
What's an Ipod?
Just kidding but I don't have one. I never advanced beyond CDs.
I used to have a powerful Kenwood Receiver housed in a dust proof cabinet which powered an assortment of big speakers, KLH I believe, mounted to the shop wall. But we blew out the speakers by playing it too loud so as to hear over our hearing protection. Odd but true. The only thing louder was a "live'" Rush concert.
More recently (30 years ago) I built this odd looking roll topped cabinet with the sunburst door panels to house my stereo, Onkyo receiver and Sherwood turntable (for those of you under 30 that is a record player). I don't take my LPs out to the shop.
Peace, Bret
What are CDs?
I have a CD player in my shop, and all my CDs get dusty. Then they get scratched. Then they skip. Then I turn on the radio. Recently, I got an iPod and listen to that instead.
I actually went and bought a shelf stereo at the local Goodwill $18.00. It sounds great and I can play my iPod through it. When the dust of the shop ruins it i will go get another. Save your Christmas gift present for something cool.
stereo
