I made this steady rest about 25 or 30 years ago to help in making Windsor chair spindles for restoration works and such . The only cost was a pair of roller bearings and some nuts and bolts and a few washers .
Hope some of you turners will find this useful.

dusty,
I have one like yours, and another with three wheels, 120* apart, that completely captures the spindle (after you turn a small area for them to bear against), for really whippy jobs.
Works well.

Ray ,
It seems like I do have a 3 point steady the one that came with a lathe made of steel , never could figure out how to use it without marring the wood.
regards hope you are surviving another winter

dusty,
Surviving so far :-) Bought seed potatoes yesterday, seemed the thing to do in honor of St Patrick. Hope to plant them Fri, barring the garden being too wet. Peas, spinach, radishes, lettuce, and onions, too. I look forward to spring, and garden season. By August it'll be sooo old!

This one old farmer had a big corn crop each year and it was always good .
When I started to garden I asked him how he knew when to plant corn ?
Mine had rotted , stunted ,and otherwise hit and miss the first few times ,
He calmly told me the time to plant corn is when the leaves on an Oak tree are the size of a squirrels ear , honest .
dusty , with a hankering fer tilling some dirt
dusty,
I've heard that, too. My father in law always planted his potatoes on St Patrick's day. My dad liked good friday. This year, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. My mom was a believer in planting "by the signs" (of the Zodiac) ; she always consulted the almanack before planting, harvesting etc. She would have said that boards that warped when you ripped them were obviously milled in an "up sign"!

It doesn't seem like Good Friday would be a good choice, given that the calendar date can vary by as much as five weeks from year to year.

steve,
Where did I say that it (any of it) made sense?? ;-)) Maybe the plan was/is to invoke Divine guidance?
One of the best crops of taters I ever dug, was planted around May 1.

Nice looking piece. I made mine with wheels from a garage-sale pair of roller-blade skates. They are resiliant , have high quality bearings. I added a third wheel on a pivoting arm from which I hang on a string a 5# weight.
