Shop lights flicker when switched to ON
I installed a used 1 HP Grainger motor on an old drill press.
The drill press is wired for and is operating off 115 V AC power.
When I flip the switch of the Drill Press to ON, the fluorescent shop
lights flicker momentarily.
Otherwise, the drill press operates just fine.
My electrician said, “Not to worry; that’s normal.”
Is it normal?
If so, why do the fluorescent lights flicker?
Thanks

It sounds like a surge problem, but since I am no-knowledge about elec. don't quote me. Sugestion: when I wired my shop I put all of the lights on one circuit and all of the big tools on another seperate circuit i.e. drill press, lathe, band saw etc.. If two of the big power tools go on at the same time the circuit will trip. If I have two of my friends using my shop it is a safety feature. I also have all of the outlets on one circuit for the same reason.
I don't know if this helps or not.

coming from ten years of electrical Expertise in a previous time in my life, maybe i can shed a little (light) on the subject. The motor that you have installed on your drill press has a fla rating. this specifies the Full Load amps that is required to operate. You may possibly have two different numbers on the motor amps and fla. A motor will always draw more current on start up than in normal operation (except under exceptional bind). If your lighting and your motor are on the same circuit, you will definately notice the startup of the motor in the lights. Your electricial was partially right. It will most likely be ok, provided that the total amperage draw for the lightiung and the moteor do not exceed the copacity of your wire size and breaker. For example my wife uses a vaccum to clean the house and we will notice dimming in the lighting associated with that circuit. Hope that helped. Enjoy shop life!:~)
