Hi Folks,
I have an occasional need to ship pieces of furniture. For smaller pieces which fit UPS size restrictions this service seems to be the best bet regarding price. However, for large items the only available service seems to be truck freight. This is usually quite expensive, $100 and up.
Does anyone with more experience than I, have any thoughts on how to ship large items at reasonable rates? How do big companies manage to ship for what would appear to be much lower rates?

Bulk, more is cheaper. A dining table to New York, NY from portland Oregon is about $600, wrapped and unwrapped, with debris removed. Add 8 chairs, you only add about $150 dollars. Essentially there is a base rate which you cannot escape. There is a core group of shippers you need to contact. Everyone else uses them and marks up.. That is why you will get quotes from $200 to $2000 for the same item.
