I am using shellac (Zinsser Seal Coat) over a stain made of Transtint dye and BLO.
The shellac is dissolving the stain and changing the color. From what I have read, this shouldn’t happen since the stain is oil based and the shellac is alcohol based.
I waited approximately 20 hours for the stain to dry in a humidity controlled shop (45%), then applied the shellac.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Randy.

Randy,
Transtint is also able to dissolve in alcohol so some lifting of the dye in possible even with a fully dry surface. 20 hours isn't really enough time for the oil to dry/cure. I would wait at least 5 days. Also, spraying the shellac would help.
You can probably wait a few days, and try again. If the color needs help you can tint the shellac with the Transtint, but this requires care so that the finish is even.

Seems like adding Transtint to oil was recently discussed on the forum at homesteadfinishingproducts.com, and the conclusion was it doesn't always mix well? Might want to look there.
Actually, I just recently finished a project using Zinsser shellac and Transtint dye mixed together to stain that project. They work quite well together and I liked the look. My guess is that letting the first coat dry very well before adding another coat of shellac and you shouldn't have any problems. This seemed to be the case with my project. What method are you using to apply the shellac?
Thanks. I going to let it dry this week and try the shellac again. I am brushing it on...very thin coats.
Randy.
Ok, that is the way I applied it. Good luck
