Is it possible to put a laquer finish over a shellac. I find that the shellac finish is not enough to protect a tabletop from water spillage and would like to apply something else. I have read laquer can go overtop a dewaxed shellac but what I have used is the orange shellac flakes which contain some wax. Another option that I was considering was to re-apply a dewaxed shellac over the existing shellac and then apply laquer or is this really necessary. Any suggestions!

grover,
i just built a few pieces including a small table out of cherry and used a triple coat of bullseye shellac, amber hue for the initial coats. I know that using the premixed and shellac is probably the easy way around but it cam out beautifully. For the top coats is used three more coats of a high gloss poly alternative called "Seal-A-Cell" (i think it is a tung-oil/varnish mixture) Now I have a hard waterstain-resistant/proff table top and the beauty of the amber shellac underneath. It worked well for me.
I have had lacquer 'orange peel' on me when applied over waxed shellac. Never had that happen when using dewaxed shellac.
Do a test first before applying poly over shellac. Some poly's don't seem to want to stick to shellac at all! It failed once for me big time, but I've heard others say that it worked great for them. One can of poly I have says not to apply it on top of shellac (Hellsman brand).

Grover - you can spray lacquer over shellac - doesn't matter if it's dewaxed on not.
Varnish and poly are the finishes not recommended over shellac with wax. Poly is the most sensitive - it won't adhere to shellac with wax.

Grover, I have read either in one of my finishing books, or in a past issue of FWW that Behlen's Rockhard TableTop Varnish can be used over dewaxed shellac. I am planning to try this soon. I would recommend a top coat of super blonde dewaxed shellac over the orange first, and I would wait a good long while before the final one or two coats of Rockhard Varnish. My experience with shellac is that It takes about 30 days of 70 degrees and low humidity to cure. Good luck. [email protected]
