Does anybody have any experience sharpening moulding planes? I would guess that I sharpen the back of the blade, then use one of those cone shaped slip sharpeners, but how do you maintain the same profile that is on the underside of the plane (other than slowly and carefully)?

Sharpening molding planes is a chore that I don't relish. As you guessed, the back is flattened and polished with whatever sharpening method you typically use. The profile of the iron must match the planes profile very accurately. I use a Dremel tool to do the rough shaping, followed by careful honing with various slip stones.
