I am considering the purchase of a 4HP Felder shaper, and I need to choose a spindle size. Is there a standard here in the U.S.? My thought was to go with the largest size available – 1 1/4 inches in dia. I don’t know much about the type of cutters that are available, so I am unsure what limitations that this dia.. might pose. Any help would be appreciated!

What model Felder machine are you looking at and what type of work do you expect to be doing?

John,
I am looking at a combination machine, CF741. I will certainly be doing the same things I do right now on my router table. In addition, I hope to be making some tenons, moldings, and panel raising - all for hardwoods.

The CF741 has interchangeable spindles, so you won't be restricted to just one size.
I would suggest that you start out with a 3/4" spindle which has a lot of tooling suitable for cabinetmaking available at reasonable prices. Even a 3/4 " inch spindle is a big step up from a table mounted router.
Later, if you want to do larger work, like wide moldings and architectural work, you might find you need the 1 1/4" size also.

Thanks - that's very helpful.
