Hi Gary,
I just finished making the birch plywood storage chest in your gallery on fww and now I need to put a finish on the arts and crafts bookcase that I made based on your fww article.
I was going to use profin but one of the sides has grain that “dives” like crazy and will take finish really unevenly. (I tested it with denatured alcohol).
Question: Will something like Benite conditioner (another daly’s product) prevent this uneven absorption of finish if I put on a coat of it before the Profin?
thanks for the inspiration!

Hey Shawn,
I don't know the Benite product. But if you call Daly's and talk to them about it, they're great and generous with their info. My guess is that if they call it a stain conditioner, then it should make for a more even absorption.
Check what type of thinner you need with the product. This will be a clue as to whether it's oil based [paint thinner required], water based [rabbit skin glue], or shellac based [denatured alcohol].
I would try a light coat of shellac myself over the oak and then go with the Pro-fin. Good luck. Gary
