Read the posts too late about the correct way to stain cherry. I’ve got blotches throughout the piece. I used a penetrating walnut stain. I’ve tried over coating with a gel to no satisfaction. Sanding is pretty much out of the question due to all the fluting and turnings I’ve done. I also tried bleach… didn’t work.
Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Stains contain a binder component which holds the pigment tight to the wood. If the piece were mine, I'd put stain on some scrap wood. Then use finish remover. Some of the stain will come out. How much? You'll find out after your experiment. If you're left with blotching (but lighter than before), I'd seal with thinned shellac. Then I'd use a "glaze" (pigment in a binder and a vehicle). Make the glaze thicker on the light areas. You can make glazes by mixing artist's oil pigments with varnish, then thinning with mineral spirits. You can put on several coats of glaze to build it up. Jeff Jewett's books on finishing (Taunton Press) are good.
