I’m turning 2 bowls. 1 bocote & 1 tamarand. Both bowls have rough spots in 2 places 180 deg apart on the inside and 2 spots on the outside 90 deg apart from the inside. I started sanding w/ 100 grit but they’re not going away. Do you start w/ 50 grit or is it just part of a turned bowl that you live with?

You are dealing with end grain tear out. As your technique improves you will have less of it. I usually start with 80 grit unless I've got a clean cut, then perhaps 100 grit will work as a start. Sand at slow speed. I suggest you finish one bowl before starting another. Wood moves and can make your sanding problem worse. Try to get where you complete one bowl in one work session. Don't leave it over night or til next weekend. Have fun!
