I am planning to make a set of wooden building blocks for a baby and want to know what kind of finishes are safe. I’ve seen block sets in stores that are bright primary colors – are these painted or stained? It seemed that stain would be better, since it cannot chip off like paint can. I would prefer some more interesting colors than just the three or four primary colors that are most common. Are there any such stains that are “baby safe”? And then would I put a clear coat of some sort on top of that? Or if I decide to just leave them uncolored natural wood, what kind of clear finish would be appropriate?
