Hello. I’m getting ready to add some rush seats to some chairs I’ve built. Has anyone out there done rush seats?
I’ve reviewed several articles but would like to hear from someone direct.
Any pointers/suggestions before I start??
Thanks!!

blue,
Are you weaving fiber (twisted paper) or natural (cattail leaves) rush? I've done a few seats with the fiber rush.

Hi Ray,
It's the fiber rush product.
Thanks
bluejay ,
The Fibre Rush goes pretty fast , the best advice I can think of is to make sure you keep the coil your weaving moist by a quick dip into water and shake off most of it . Un twist and twist as you weave to keep a uniform look.
The larger diameters seem to look tighter in-between strands , choose the correct color .
Some seats with different ht rails get padded in between the rush with various materials , cardboard triangles , straw , whatever has been used .
good luck dusty
Thanks for the reply. How do you measure out the lengths? It seems that too much won't fit through the "hole" towards the end and then there's the possibility that you might come up short and have to "splice" another piece on and not be able to hide the connection.
Thanks again!!
jay ,
On the last step is mostly when the right size length is important .
when you get to the figure 8 the last step usually front to back on the last splice calculate the length by the number of strands , say 8 , times the seat from front to back say about 36" times 8 strands you need a piece about 24 - 28 feet long .
You really can't leave it coiled up towards the end steps . You want to pull up on each strand not straight out when they come through the center hole .

blue,
You can trim back shorter so that the splice is on the underside, and tuck it up, where it won't be obvious. I spritz with water in a windex-type bottle to keep the rush soft/flexible. Hard on the fingers.

Thanks for the help fellas. Almost done. The trickiest step was the transition to the "figure 8". I'll post some pictures when the chairs are finished. What do you treat the rush with when your done? I've heard shellac is the way to go. Whatever I use, I need to color it to match the original.
yes, hard on the fingers!
Thanks again for the help!!
blue,
I knew you could do it.
