Friends,
I was moving the dial of my short wave radio and there was a lot of static masking BBC. But I thought that I heard that Lataxe has retired from woodworking and if off pursuing other hobbies he has had for a long time, such as bicycling and shooting the bow and arrow. I haven’t seen him on Knots for a while. Does anyone have any real information?
IF Lataxe has retired from woodworking, THINK ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITIES. THINK OF THE TOOLS IN HIS SHED. He has at least 72 Marcou planes, a thickness sander that is over two meters wide and, in a single pass, it can remove over 4 cm of purpleheart from a four foot wide board using 600 grit sandpaper. Besides that, I believe he has a crank neck chisel. Anyway, given the total lack of facts, it would be nice to know what happened to our old friend. His approach to woodworking and life are unique, and his presence is missed. One of my favorite memories on Knots is the way Lataxe would call out Charles Stanford and get him to pull Adam Cherubini’s chain, which inevitably resulted in Adam’s spinning himself up to supersonic speed. I miss those days. I miss those days. The only thing we had to worry about was an invasion by Russia. But on the bright side, that gave us an excuse to build bomb shelters.
I know the answer to “Where’s Wally? and “Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?”. But I don’t know what Lataxe is doing these days, and whether we can get his tools at bargain prices.

Pretty much like you said but with a few detours of late.
(the targets and stuff not the selling his tools bit, unfortunately for us.)
You have seen the movie Highlander ?

It's like that . . . sort of. Well more along the lines of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy right when the Vogons were about to blow up the whole Earth just to make way for a hyperspace bypass (which by the way was later scrapped when the drive based on bistromathmatics was invented but that's another story).
He is out hitchhiking the galaxy looking for great times, adventure and really wild stuff .
Basically.
: )
I wouldn't worry about him. Much.
I saw him recently. He was spending his time jumping in and out of a lake. When I spoke to him he said he had decided to go mad (said it did him no end of good ) and that he imagined himself to be a lemon slice and had gone in search of a gin and tonic to jump into. The lake believed it was a gin and tonic so that was all alright then. At least, he said, he thought that was what the lake had told him.
Well OK we better go check on him. Does anyone have a subethasensomatic we can rely on? The batteries in mine are flat.
Roc,
the last time I saw Lataxe, it was at the restaurant at the edge of the universe.
Doug Adams sends his best.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

I'm new to this group, which I discovered while hunting up images of the Sidney Barnsley chest... apparently Lataxe was making a repo earlier in the year. Anyone know if he finished it and posted some pictures?
Yes, he finished the chest and he posted many photos of it as he was building it. But the website is in disarray, and many of the photos have disappeared. I don't know if they are lost forever, or if the links are just broken and will be fixed.
Good luck.

perhaps he just got tired ron

Ron,
I believe you hit the nail on the head. Hopefully he will come back to woodworking, but if I had to guess, it would be that his persistent intensity brought about a need for a switch. He has always had a number of other interests. Perhaps, he is focusing on those. I CANNOT imagine Lataxe being idle.

well whatever it is
I hope that he is enjoying good health

The "Knots Bard"
I could only dream that the "Knots Bard" has signed a contract with the BBC, PBS or Taunton to start a new Woodworking Show and is too busy to inject those pearls of wisdom to this forum at the moment.
Perhaps there is a typo Bruce? Maybe you meant to say he is Knots barred, rather than the Knots bard, ha, ha. Slainte.
Richard, Or maybe he was
Richard,
Or maybe he was "Knots bored". It has happened to others too.

PS have you thought of coming over for a week or two every year, and teaching a course at Marc Adams' school. You could do a course in "The business or running a woodworking shop". Or maybe a course on design, entitled "To err is human. To anticipate is design." Or, "On learning to teach woodworking". I believe there are a number of courses you could do at Marc's place that would be use your unique talents, would reimburse you nicely while you got a chance to stop over to see your friends across the pond.
"Knote bored" ?? Do you use a
"Knote bored" ?? Do you use a spoon bit to make these?
Anyway, I think it was me that drove him away. I remember awhile ago I typed something and he responded in words that I had no idea what they meant!
Grandfather again. Finaly I have two grandsons. Girls outnumber three to one!

Jimmy,
You knew that Lee was in the Carribean for a while. Did you know that he became an international money trader? I certainly can imagine Lataxe having a few pints with Lee, but in my wildest thoughts, I cannot imagine Lataxe as a currency trader.
Haven't heard from Lee for a while. It is time to write to him again and see how things are going.
