I have a router plane that needs to be sharpened. This may be like asking a question about religion, but here goes. Does anyone have an opinion on the best way to sharpen it?

I sharpen it by rubbing the bevel sideways along the stone, then honing the back by rubbing in the normal way.
You could wait a little while until Derek Cohen pops in. I'm sure he'll have a better way.
Incidentally Rockler sell replacement blades which dismantle so that you can remove the bottom bit of the iron, screw it to a holder and then sharpen it like a chisel.
I agree - that's how I sharpen mine too. Remember: maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. Don't let your blades get too dull!Chris @ http://www.flairwoodworks.com and http://www.flairwoodwork.spaces.live.com)

Hi Bob
What I do is first create a slight hollow on the face of the bevel. You can do this with a Dremel or sandpaper wrapped around a dowel. It does not need to be deep.

This will make it easier to hone (in a sideways direction) on a waterstone (or another medium).
