Lie-Nielsen No. 102 Low Angle Block Plane
With smooth, precise adjustments and wonderful balance, this compact block plane is a joy to use. It doesn’t have any bells and whistles, but there’s not a better block plane available for the money.

Festool ETS EC 125/3 EQ-Plus Sander 5-in.
- Without a vacuum, stock removal was poor and dust collection fair - With a vacuum, dust collection was excellent, tock removal fair to poor - Roomy waist, but square body isn’t very comfortable - Very quick to stop
Triton TPT125 Planer
Accessing the knives on the Triton for changes was not difficult, but getting the knives out was tricky, because no magnetized handles were provided to lift the knives off the cutterhead. There is a 2-1/2-in.-dia. dust port, and chip collection was good when hooked up to a shop vacuum. The housing has an open top and just one return roller on top, making it impossible to stack boards there in between passes through the machine. Also, there is no gauge that indicates how much material you are removing in a pass, making it one of four planers that don’t offer this feature.

I think that ebay is a pretty good deal for wooden molding planes (the rounds that you were mentioning). Shop and enjoy the good deals, but it is still a crap shoot to some extent. Every once in a while you will get a bad tool. I've bought a bunch of molding planes off of there and many great ones but the last dado plane I bought was warped to a banana shape. I guess in this case the digital photography made it look straight. Naturally the seller said she ddidn't know anything about this "old wooden tool-thingie." I was underwhelmed but will probably use it for parts in making another plane. Or if I ever need to cut a curved dado with a fourteen foot radius, I'm there.
For plows, I like the Stanley 50. You can get one cheap and make your own cutters if you don't want to spend a lot of dough.
If you do want to spend a lot of dough, I like the wooden plow planes available from reputable tool dealer sites.
Good luck, Ed
Appreciate your advice. I'll checkout e-bay. Not every picture tells a story I guess, but then maybe some are just mysteries! I'm a little e-bay shy but got to make the jump sometime!
Japan Woodworker has some Chinese-style hollow and round planes; nice set of 18 in matching pairs, or you can buy them separately.
Good suggestion - I'll check their website.
Ebay is awesome.. I was intimitdated at first but once you realize that 99% of the Ebay people out there are honest it's a really good time. You can find some really good deals on tools and you can pay with credit card through a broker type service called PayPal or you can send the seller a check or money order. Either way, the seller doesn't get ahold of any of your personal info at all. I've bought and sold over 200 tools and have not had a bad experience yet.
I just got a set of the 1/4 round and plow planes that are Chinese made that they sell at the Japan wood worker. And they work well. I spent a little time flating the back of the blade and honed the edge on a water stone and it cut really well.
Have Fun
Troy
Clark and Williams makes hollows and rounds, and while I wouldn't call them cheap they do probably reprepresent good value, because they are the very top quality.
