I have some expensive rosewood chairs to repair= beautiful finish but the joints are coming apart– the joints are quite small [only 3/4 ” surface and 1/2″ floating tenon} I can’t get water to have any effect on the existing glue so I am assuming hide glue was not used– my concern is if I use tite bond can I get the surfaces clean enough to get a bond–I think I would probably get some tite bond 3– I do not undwerstand why anyone would make something with joints so small–I will make new tenons– thanks

vern,
If you scrape as much of the old glue off as possible new glue should hold. I would generally use Urea Resin powder glue you mix with water when working with older furniture repairs. This glue seemed to be more forgiving and more compatible with old glues . Perhaps the size of the tenons and joints is in scale with the design of the chairs .If you must make new tenons try and use the same wood type as originally used .
good luck dusty
thanks -- those are all good ideas-I will let you know how it comes outmaking sawdust
Vern...
My two cents
Rosewood is quite oily and benefits from an acetone wipe down before gluing...
I've also found in the past that titebond and yellow glue aren't the best on rosewood...polyurethane (ick), epoxy and resin glues work better.
Good holidays thus far?
Hope all is well
Alison
