I am thinking about purchasing a new bandsaw this weekend and I was wondering what any of you guys thought of yours or why you wouldnt get the rikon 14″ deluxe model. I wonder if the powermatic would be better.
Thanks for your input..Mike

I recently purchased the Steel City 14" saw after looking at the Rikon 14" saw. I chose the SC over Rikon for several reasons--I've seen them both in person, and was less impressed with the Rikon. I've also heard on this forum and elsewhere about problems with fit/finish/table flatness, blade tracking, etc. After talking to my SC dealer here in Houston, and reading Sarge's research into SC's 18" saw and the company in general, I chose the SC 14" and a riser block kit to increase the resaw capacity to 12". The fit and finish of the SC is very good, and it purrs with little or no vibration. I'm happy with my choice. Hope that helps. Tom
Thanks for the idea. I have the steel city deluxe joiner and feel like its a pretty good machine. I have a slight cup in its fence but other than that I like it. I know that steel city has had articles written about their bandsaws and have had issues with their tops being flat also so I am beginning to get a little confused about where to sink my money. I am glad to know you are happy with your purchase and will definately consider it. I was thinking about a Laguna 14se but with all the knots on Laguna I am no longer sure. I guess every manufacturer will have a few issues.
Morning MP72..

May I make a suggestion? Why don't you go to a Steel City dealer with a straight edge firmly in tow and check the top. And by all means do it with the front pin inserted and not out as done by the article you mentioned. The factory ground the table with the pin in and that is the way to check for flatness... not with the pin out as done by the reviewer in that article.
Perhaps then you will clear your mind of the un-justified "under the belt" blow that article created. Just my opinion of course. We all have one!

I think you are right SARGE. I will probably do that no matter which saw I choose. MIKE

And you are a wise man to do so.. They all look pretty in the pictures, but until you open the hood and see what makes em tick, you don't know if they are really "fighters" or just have on a nice uniform.
A good machine will stand up and speak for itself........
