I have the Ridgid two blade planer, no issues with it. I recently got some exotic wood, red marble wood to be specific, and planed it down to make a chess board. This wood seemed to kill my blades pretty quickly. It also killed my band saw blade but that one has been in use for a while and not unexpected.
So should I just keep getting HSS blades or are there carbide blades that have a longer life? I think the spiral head is out of the question due to cost. Any recommendations for blades?
Thanks, Tom

Veritas Wheel Marking Gauge
A wheel-type gauge is the easiest to use, and this wonderful Veritas model is a steal at $38.
Liberon Steel Wool
Perfect for rubbing out a finish for a low-luster sheen.
Festool Rotex FEQ-Plus Random Orbital Sander
The Festool Rotex is a top-of-the-line choice. On its coarse setting, it removed stock nearly twice as quickly as the second-fastest model. But that speed doesn’t mean you’ll have to wrestle with it. It’s no huge task to control it with two hands, and its long body gives you plenty of room to find a sweet spot while holding it.
Jet JWJ-8HH Helical Head 8-In. Jointer
This machine joints a very good surface, with a fence that is flat and smooth-moving. The fence is easy to set to 90°, and it stayed that way. The 90° stop was also easy to set and reliable. The start and stop buttons can be installed above or below the infeed table.
Foam Brushes
Foam brushes are great for applying a variety of stains and finishes, and the 2" wide brush is the most versatile. Comes in a pack of 48.

No ideas?
It sounds like you just had a batch of really abrasive wood. Unless you plan on using that often, I'd just put in new HSS blades and go back to the usual woods.
