I obtained an oak wine barrel from France some time ago. I want to make a project from the oak staves. My question is the staves have been steamed into the barrel shape. Is it possible to resteam or relax the oak staves so they will become flat again ?

So far as I know there is no reason that you couldn't resteam the staves to straighten them out. I am not sure if they will straighten out just from the steaming, they may need to be clamped in a simple jig, one that possibly has a slight reverse curve to compensate for springback.

Hi John,
Thank you for getting back to me on this. I didn't consider a curved jig for spring back.
