Just a question about replacement knives for the Dewalt 735 planer.
Are the dewalt knives the only replacements? Reason for the ? is that lately there have been a lot of posts about the quality of their knives lacking, I havent even purchased the planer yet, however if their knives are that bad, and I cant buy a better replacement blade, it might be worth re-thinking the purchase?
Any owners out there care to chime in? Thanx in advance.

Unless they're a crazy size, good-quality knives are readily available for other sources. Search the archives for "replacement knives" and see what you get.

I'll have to disagree with Pete Bradley on this one. Larger cast iron planers with blades that could be resharpened used standard sized knives that could be purchased from several manufacturers but this isn't true for the benchtop machines.
Almost all of the newer design benchtop machines with disposable knives have blades that fit that machine only because of notches and/or holes in the blade that align the blade in the head. Occasionally you can find blades from one brand of machine that fit another brand because they are using the same cutter head. But in that case, the knives are probably coming from the same source, even though they are packaged under two different brand names.

I guess I should have started with "Unless they're a crazy size or configuration..." If the knives are customized to the machine in a way that's not readily duplicated, you're outta luck.It sounds like knife availability and non-weirdness should be part of the equation when choosing a brand of portable planer. Anyone know which brands have knives that are more/less available?Pete

I think that all of the portable machines now have disposable blades and that the blades are only available from the machines maker because each brand has a slightly different alignment pin layout in the machine's cutter head. The manufacturers probably don't see any advantage to make a standard blade that would fit all machines, since they would prefer to have you locked into buying the replacements from the original manufacturer.
Grizzly used to make a benchtop machine with a standard straight knife that could be resharpened and the blades could be replaced with those from another blade supplier since they were standard sized with no holes or notches. That model was discontinued and the replacement model has disposable blades that probably don't match any other machine.
I have a Ridgid planer that works well and I can get blades for it at Home Depot which is convenient and a cost saving since I don't have to mail order them and pay shipping. Most of the blade sets seem to sell for around $30 to $35 no matter what machine they are made for.

Well, you all wanted a quick change blade and thats what you got. Dewalt doesn't make a set of carbides for the 735 but I've had blades made for several different applications, none of which were any more or less complex than the standard Dewalt replacements. Farallon Knives at http://www.bitsnblades.com should be able to make a set of decent blades for you.

Do a web search for American Industrial Resources. I posted a link but it woudn't work. They sell all sizes of planer blades.
