Hello
I have an old Stanley Bailey 4C With a broken part.
I am attaching a photo so you can see exactly what I need to replace. I would like to find an old trashed plane and swap out the lever on the cap but if I have too I will get a new one if possible or weld, grind and drill the one I have.
Is it possible to buy a replacement?
Thank you,
David

If you want an exact replacement, please post a picture of the entire lever cap.Does it have the Stanley name on it, and is the hole in the center for the screw keyhole or kidney shaped?
Maybe someone here has one.
If you just need a lever cap, you can buy one directly from Stanley.

As requested...I would like to keep it as original as possible. A gleaming new part would look so out of place.Thank you,
David
Hi David
Keep an eye out on eBay - that is the easiest way.
Yours is a Type 12 and earlier (that is, all fit up to and including Type 12).
Regards from Perth
Derek
Thank you Derek, Ill do just that. I appreciate you IDing my part for me. Im new to this wood stuff. Been a metal fab guy all my life. Time for a change :-)
Actually, it's from a type 10, 11 or 12. You might see if Walt Quadrato at Brass City Records. Type 7 through 12 would look right on your plane but someone could tell it was replaced if you use a type 7 or type 8 lever cap. Type 7 will have an "S" casting mark in the relieved section of the back and type 8 will have a "B" casting mark.Edited to add the Brass City web site url:http://www.brasscityrecords.com/51.html

Of just the lever, probably not. But you can pick up a complete cap much more easily I would say. If it is chromed, and you have a belt grinder then the chrome is easily and quickly removed and the iron can easily be made to match the rest of the cap, which from the picture appears unchromed.Or you can painfully remove the chrome with files and abrasive papers. A plating shop would also do it -if you know of one.
The lever is simple to detach and replace- use a pin punch to drift out the pin- they are not even peened, just an interference fit as there is not a lot of work for them to do.
David,
Post a few more pictures of the full cap along with the width of the bottom edge and I'll see if I have a match in my barn.

I have had luck with parts from St. James Bay Tool Company. He also keeps some spare parts around. Can be a little slow. Ti is best if you can get him on the phone http://www.stjamesbaytoolco.com/Dan Carroll
HelloThe cap measures 1 31/32 wide at the bottom.Attached is a collage of the plane. If I left anything out that you may need just let me know and I will get the shot.Thank you all for your help. It is appreciated.David
That's what I needed, I'll look in my parts box tonight.John w.
It took awhile but I finally located a replacement cap for your plane. It is from a Stanley and looks identical to yours, same width and 4 5/16" from top to bottom not counting the little lever that is broken off of yours. It's rusted but should clean up well. If you still need it I'll figure out a price.John W.
I sent him one and he sent me a thank you email a while back, John. I found a good type 11 one. Just closing the loop in case he doesn't see this thread."Yes, but what's good for me ain't necessarily good for the weak-minded." - Augustus McCrae, Lonesome Dove

I'm on an out of town jobsite working nights all week so I can't look these up for you. In the Want Ads section of Fine Woodworking there are two guys who deal in Stanley plane parts. One of them should have what you need.

Etc. etc.
I've got a type 11 lever cap from a No. 5 that will fit. It is ground too short at the wide end. I believe someone used it for a screw driver, broke a chunk off, then ground it back past the broken area.
However, if you just want to knock the pin out and replace the lever, the lever on it is fine and would work well, and be from the correct era.
Let me know if you want it - I'll mail it to you. It'll be kind of a science project to find it, but I know I've got it down in my basement somewhere.
Take care, Ed
Thats very generous Ed,You make your basement sound scary. Let someone know you are going down in case its gets you.If you do find it I can send you a postage paid package to send it in.Thank you,
David
Ahh, it's not that scary. There's just boxes of junk from back when I was buying tools off ebay on just about a daily basis a few years ago. Email me through knots (click on my name and select "send email") with your address and I will get 'er in the mail first thing tomorrow morning. No sweat on the postage - I've got karma built up from all the folks that have given me free tools over the years.
