Peter: I made a post on Knots about this, but I want to get as much input as possible. I’ve taken on a project to repair the chipped veneer on a 100+ year old bed. The damage on the rails is extensive, the finish is original and darkened with age. I was surprised that a “Google” search on repairing veneer turned up so little. Lots on veneering in general but little on repair… Any suggestions on sources?? Thanks…John

Eagle,
I'm sorry i don't have any immediate sources for you. I'm lucky enough to have one of the best people I've ever met close to me that does that type of repair.
The biggest thing is to find some old veneer if possible.
You can get some fairly cheap by going to an auction or tag sale and buy a fairly cheap or beat up chest of drawers of about the same era.. These are an invaluable source of old veneers.
A purist might not think so but to me this is a great way to recycle something that may end up in the dump.
Just know that when you take this job and put your hands on it, it's yours and you have to perform. If the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, turn the job down.
If you have already taken it, believe it or not, it could be a great learning experience.
Good luck,
Peter Gedrys
