I need to repair a built-in cabinet in an old home(mine). The bottom of the drawer sides, and the rails they ride on, are worn. They also go in crooked making it difficult to open and close. Appreciate any advise on how to repair (in place) and adjust.
Thanks
Tom

You haven't provided a lot of info. What kind of slides?
Do you have room to put metal slides in? There are several that mount below the box these days. Do you have access below the drawer in question, to be able to work? Woodcraft has some gadgets for locating slides for about $30, but I believe the are for sidemounts.
Can you replace the entire drawer box, and reuse the face, so as to match the rest of the cab? That would open up several other options.
You might try a "centermount" drawer slide. They mount on the bottom of the drawer. For extra load capicity you can use a pair. Most home centers carry them. Cost about $10.00 each. You may need to remove the bottom edges of the sides that are worn and replace them with a piece of hardwood strip, glued in place. Best of luck!
If it is wood drawer on wood runner, you can try some of the UHMW (sp) tape - makes a nice sliding surface and adds about 1/16 " thickness. I had an old dresser and I put the tape on the runner and on the bottom of the drawer and it slides like a dream
1 - measure the board twice
2 - cut it once
3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go
4 - get a new board and go back to step 1
thanks fr all your suggestions. They are the basic drawer sides sliding on wood runners. After 80 years they have gotten a bit worn. The drawers are in excellent condition otherwise.Up grading to a center slide sounds interesting, I think I'll check it out.
Thanks again for the input!

clem,
I'd recommend removing the bearers inside the cabinet, and turning them over. You should get another 80 yrs out of them.
The drawer sides should be "half-soled". Take the sides apart from the drawer, and rip the worn edge off. Clean up and glue on a slip of new wood to build back to the original width, or a little over. Re-assemble the drawer, and refit to the opening.
Works like new, because it is as good as. Wax the bearing surfaces with a bit of old candle.

Ray
They are the basic drawer sides sliding on wood runners..
If it were me... Do you have a router?.. I would 'true' up the drawer slot with the router and glue in a hardwood shim..
What part is worn the worst? Drawer or runner? Can you remove the runners and make new ones?
