I’m refinishing a Maple dresser (I think it’s Maple). The old brown stain seeped pretty far into the pores of the wood and I’m having a difficult time sanding all the dark flecks out. Is there a bleach or filler that will remove/cover the flecks. Some of the grain figure is pretty nice and I’d like to really bring that out.
Thanks,
Chip

Are you just sanding the finish off? Have you tried a paint stripper?
*Hi Gretchen, I stripped the finish with BIX but some residual stain remained in the wood pores. The maple is so #%&@ hard that 60 grit paper barely scratches it. The face grain is going okay but my edge and end grain is pretty slow work.
*As I recall, BIX is a Methylene Chloride stripper and should remove almost all finishes. But some stains and dyes are embedded into the wood and almost impossible to remove with a stripper. Did you use a stiff plastic brush to work the stripper into the pores--although maple has little in the way of pores? You can try a bleach. A chlorine (Clorox) bleach removes dye. Be sure to use a freshly opened container as chlorine bleach rapidly loses effectiveness when exposed to air. If the stain is a pigment stain, you will have to sand it out. Finally, end wood is almost impossible to clean up. The capillary action of the end grain sucks liquid deep into the wood. Either cutting about 1/4" off the end or sanding very deeply is required.
*Chip,For more on stripping, click on this: Danford C. Jennings "Finish restoration" 4/12/01 2:00amHoward gives good advice. If you do use bleach, make sure that you rinse the piece with water to remove the bleach. But, be advised this will raise the grain.Dano
