O.k.–just read a couple posts about cabinets–one on filling grain on oak, the other on what type of paint t use. Here’s my question, falls somewhere between those two posts:
We want to refinish our kitchen cabinets. They’re a medium brown oak. We don’t like the color. I don’t know who made them or what type of finish was used. We’d like to make them very, very light, almost white, with just a little bit of grain showing.
Any tips on how to achieve that washed, (pickled?) look? Will it require a sanding/stripping, or can we simply paint over it? We’ll be doing a test run on inconspicuous parts, but maybe someone can get us started in the right direction.
p.s.–my father-in-law, who knows a little about this sort of thing, refused to offer advice because he thinks we’re going to “ruin” the natural beauty of the wood.
Thanks in advance.

Strip the wood, then apply "Iced Oak" stain, and clearcoat.
Thanks. Is "Iced Oak" a brand name?
no it is a color used by, among others, Minwax.
it's basically fine white pigment suspended in oil. you can make your own, if you're ambitious.
Like jackplane said, you can make it yourself. Just get some oil based white or eggshell white paint and thin it with mineral spirits to the dilution you like after testing it on scrap wood.
That's all I have ever used and it works fine.
