Hi folks,
I’m refinishing kitchen cabinets that are about 13 years old. They’re white oak with a thinned white wash stain and a clear finish. My wife wants just a flat off white cabinet with perhaps a glazed antique look. I have HVLP and and want to use nitro cellulose lacquer paint, apply a glaze, then finish with a flat clear to get the look she wants. My question is how should the present surface be prepared, and is my finishing plan sound. I have no idea what the present finish is. The cabinets were custom made by a high-end cabinet shop that is out of business now and i would think the topcoat they use would have been a lacquer but I’m not sure. I would hate to think of trying to strip the current finish and was hoping to scuff sand and start spraying? Thanks in advance for your advice!!

Hi Jimmy ,
Usually a good cleaning with TSP , do any patch work old screw holes and such . Sand or give it a good scuff coat for adhesion .
You may need to use a heavy duty primer / Gripper product depending on the exact paint you end up using . Check with your paint shop , see what they recommend .
The finish you are shooting for seems forgiving .
good luck dusty
