hello to all… i am repairing an old singer machine cabinet for one of my customers & she asked me to try to take care of the poor, worn, peeling, finish, at least on the top. so i am going to strip the top & the bottom of the top (the work surface) & i am thinking of scuff sanding the rest & spraying the whole thing with a water based lacquer which requires a lacquer sealer. i am not sure what the existing finish is, but it takes stripper to get it off. my question is – is the w.b. lacquer going to stick? or should i use a different finish? this is my first attempt at a refinish. thanx again!

How about sealing it with a dewaxed shellac (e.g. Zinnser Seal Coat)?
Anything will adhere to that -- including WB lacquer.
