Hi,
I have five mahogany locker doors – they were rescued from a burn pile during a state park renovation in the 60s. I’ve refinished furniture before, but never frame and panel doors. They’re very unique so I don’t want to mess them up. After I’ve stripped the paint (the rescuer painted them yellow years ago), how should I refinish them? I know when you build these doors from scratch, you glue them up after the panels are finished. Will the door need to be taken apart? Or can I put a wipe-on finish on the door while it is in one piece?
I’ve attached some pictures of the center of the door (it’s 7 feet tall, so I can’t get the whole thing in the photo). Any advice would be helpful.
Thank you!
Jenny

Jenny,
There is no need to take them apart.
To finish getting the paint off, apply some more stripper on the offending area. Let it work and then remove it with 00 steel wool or a grey scotch pad. Be sure and protect your hands and eyes doing this.
When the stripping is complete, wash and dry the surface with some paint thinner (mineral spirits) Do this in sections; panels first, then rails and stiles.
When dry, do any sanding required and clean all your dust off.
Now you can apply your finish of choice.
Good luck.
Peter
