Hello all,
I finally got around making a makeshift bandsaw sled. I’ve been anxious to because I scored several elm logs from our nearby city park about the same time I got my saw (last October) and they’ve been sitting in the driveway all winter. Also slabbed out some spalted mountain ash from a tree in the back yard.
Here it is with the biggest of the elm logs (max dia ~ 14″, chopped down to 13″ish to get under the guides). Plywood, a couple of roller stands, and some decking screws. There’s a hardwood runner on the bottom that rides in the miter slot. Works pretty well and have found that the trick is to go slow enough that the blade doesn’t wander. Now just have to find a spot to sticker it all up…
Thansk to my friend Bob for helping get the big one onto the sled. His wife Leanne asked me what i’m going to make and I replied “I’m not sure yet, but I’ve got a year to figure it out while it dries.”
Cheers,
Chris C.
(pardon the duplicate large file, couldn’t figure out how to delete it once i’d uploaded it).

Chris,
That's impressive! What blade are you using?
Good luck with the drying.

Nice work! That log's a monster for a home shop. It shows how you don't need a lot of fancy stuff as long as you get the basic principles right.
Pete
Thanks Pete,
The log is definitely at the big end of the spectrum for what I could handle and the whole thing has been an interesting experience. And I agree about being low tech; the sled was inspired by the Laguna sled in concept... Definitely worth the effort for the sense of harvesting local wood and for the ability to get unusual wood such as the ash and some hawthorne that also came out of the yard.
The blade is a cheap ($20) woodland hardware 3 tpi skip tooth (not woodslicer) that has done fine so far. Also have a 1" carbide, but i've been too chicken to use it for the rough cutting for fear of a nail.

"Also have a 1" carbide, but i've been too chicken to use it for the rough cutting for fear of a nail"FYI, Lenox doesn't recommend using a Tri-master on green lumber, not too sure about the Laguna Resaw King or the Timberwolf carbide band.
Chris,
Way cool. Is that the Minimax machine? What's going on with your blade guides and guard? I noticed some yellow stuff in one of the pics near the upper guides. Did you make mods? I have the same saw (I think).
Rob Kress
Hello Rob,
The saw is a Agazani B18. I haven't made any mods to it. The resaw is 13" and bit; I had to axe off some bark in a couple of cases. You'd have no trouble with a log of that length. The log weighed 100+ lbs and was slightly bigger than anything l'll mess with in future :). Once I got a flat face and then split it, I was able to slab it using the fence. Thought long and hard about the mm16, but couldn't justify the extra cash (the difference at the time was as much as I paid for my dewalt planer). Have been very happy with it.
Cheers,
C
ID naughty,
How long was the log?
-Steve
The log was 5.5' and still green.
Cheers,
C
Nice project, and may your resulting lumber dry flat and straight.
I was always under the impression, however, that "redneck sleds" were used for moving coal. Or, ammo, from one side of the "compound" to the other. ;-)
