Your not too far from Charlotte, really. I buy lumber from Johnson's Workbench in Charlotte occassionally. They are good people to work with and they ship anywhere in the state. The shipping costs are reasonable too. I had about 450 bd.ft. shipped to Hemlock (near Saginaw) for like $35. They hit certain areas on specified days of the week and use their own truck. The driver also helped be unload to my shop, really nice guy.
You can find Johnson's on the web at http://www.theworkbench.com to find directions, phone, etc. No affiliation other than a satisfied customer.

Edward, I'll second Brian's opinion. I now live in suburban Detroit (Troy, MI) and buy most of my hardwood lumber from L.L. Johnson in Charlotte. They run one of the best mills left in the Lower Peninsula and they are especially nice people to deal with. They put on an open-house sale once a year in the fall to unload odd lots of lumber and for serious woodworkers, looking for a few hundred board feet of hardwoods, it's one of the best buying opportunities in the Midwest.
I'll third Brian's opinion and second Jon's: L.L. Johnson is a good, large supplier to work with, with good coverage in Michigan. The sales staff are always helpful (especially in locating deals) and the delivery folks are always prompt and courteous.
I have to confess, I generally go to a local sawmill for most of my wood, but I'm in SW Michigan. I generally use Johnson's when they have a great bargain (look under the "classifieds" section of their website; it's updated frequently) or if I need something special. My orders are usually small, but I feel well-treated nonetheless.
DavidHmmm... the garden or the workshop today?
I live in a western sub. I usually go to Armstrong Millworks in Highland MI. It is Just east of US23 on M59 (5 miles or so.) They have a good selection and you can buy it in the rough or they will process it to what ever level you would like.
Hank
