Hi, I have a couple small clocks in oak. I made a couple of years ago I don’t remember what finish I use either slalac or ureathane. I would like to put a coat of spay ureathane on to briten it up a bit. Can I just sanded a little and spray on the ureathane.
Thanks Cherry42

I would say you will be fine as long as you lightly sand the old finish to rough it up a bit to get good adhesion with the new finish. The new urethane is compatible with shellac or other oil based finish.
Polyurethane varnish sometimes has problems adhering over shellac that still has the natural wax left in it. So unless you are confident that the shellac you used was dewaxed then I would hesitate over using poly. I'd really think about using shellac for this application. It should be fully durable enough for use on a clock, is fast to apply, and doesn't change color over time.
Thanks
