Since many of the files we’all read from the Tauton web site are in .PDF form, I figured it’s kosher to post this in General Discussion rather than the Cafe. A side discussion in another thread prompted this post:
If you are frustrated with Adobe Acrobat PDF reader or resent the amount of space it takes up on your computer, check out the free Foxit Reader. What the difference? More than a factor of 10 size-wise. Acrobat is over 33 MB in size, Foxit is 2.56 MB. I don’t know all the ins and outs of Foxit, but one feature I appreciate is the ability to complete PDF forms on my computer and then print them out. Worked great when we were filing our taxes this year! Fill out the 1040, the Schedule C, and all the weird attachments my husband has to file, save a copy and then print it out.
Major kudoes to Glaucon for bringing this wonderful program to my attention last year!!

Thanks,
I've been wanting to dump Adobe Reader. The only way it'll allow me to avoid constantly having to close a pop-up window demanding an upgrade is to let the d@mn thing exist as a "start-up" program. This unnecessarily increases boot-up time, eats memory until I manually shut it down, and generally p1sses me off. The simple fact that Mac people seem expect this kind of stuff from programs is the one thing that will probably keep me from looking at a Mac when I'm faced with the nightmare Microsoft calls Vista.
Maybe one of the Mac geeks around here can help you shut the thing up? I figure that given there's a way to completely uninstall Windows Messenger, miracles do exist.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Hey FG... I told you about Foxit ~ a year ago... what gives, why so long in checking it out? Still using dial-up? You island folks... (LOL).
BTW, Foxit also has plug-ins for Firefox, which are quite handy. The combination of Acrobat + browser is the slowest and must frustrating approach to surfing pdfs I can imagine.

Glaucon, thanks for speaking up!!! I've been using it ever since you told me about it, but I couldn't remember who did. I will dash over to 42891.1 and give you well-deserved credit for enlightening this forestlady as to the joys of non-bloated software.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
I downloaded it last night, happy to be rid of Acro reader. Thanks FG and Glaucon.
