Would the HiPURformer hot glue system be a good alternative for rebonding old mortise and tenon joints? Multiple coats of various agents through the years have made reaching bare wood on these joints quite difficult. The article by Jeff Jewitt (Fine Woodworking #125) was helpful, but adequately cleaning out the old mortise, without significantly enlarging it, seems a great challenge.

Geez Mike I've never used this hot melt glue. I'd contact the manufacturer and ask them if it's really a good gap filler. My own choice for a gap filler is epoxy. As for cleaning up old mortises, you are bound to enlarge them. But if you glue on a small sliver of wood to the tenon you can fit the joint tightly and well that way. Good luck. Gary
Gary,
Thank you. I love the HiPURformer for so many "Tite Bond" applications. Its a bit thick, but fills well, bonds like liquod nails, and hardens like rock.
Mike
