I am going to build a new cabinet to hold a double oven. It will be 30 inch wide, 24 deep and 97 high to match the hieght of the current wall cabinets.
I am going to build a raised panel side for each side of the cabinet. Normally I would cut Dadoes for the bottom, shelfs and tops into pre-finished plywood. How would you do this with a raised panel side? Is there an alternative to using a plywood sides with the panel attached to the ouside of it? My concern is that the faceframe for this cabinet will be too wide to cover the plywood and panel.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Larry,
What I normally do is:
Make my faceframe as usual
Make the side panels just like a cabinet door except with 3 panels. That would mean 2 extra rails that divide the height into thirds. Make the top and bottom rails match, for width, the existing cabinetry.
Glue these sides to the facefreme adding the top and bottom with partitions as needed.

Paul,
Thanks for the response. I am actually going to make it with 4 panels since it is 23 1/4 deep and 97 high. What I am trying to figure out is before the face frame how would I attach the bottom on fixed shelves where I would noramally cut dadoes into plywood panels. I need a strong bottom shelf to support the oven. The panels should float free so cutting a dadoe in the pack of the panel and glueing it up would not work.
Inside of the cabinet, attach cross pieces, 1" by 2" and as deep as the cabinet, to the front and rear frame stiles to support the shelves. A couple of screws and some glue at each end will make a very solid attachment.John W.
With a double oven the bottom will be about 12-18" off the floor (if memory serves) so having a rail there for a dado wouldn't be aesthetically pleasing, for me anyway. But it would be one way of addressing the support issue with that type of construction.
I use pocket screws for attaching my fixed shelves and partitions. You could run a cleat around where the fixed shelf will be (bottom of oven) and than use vertical supports to the floor to help support the weight of the oven. The correct height for a double oven should allow enough room for a shallow drawer under the oven that is often useful for cookie sheets etc. So, unless your faceframe is less than 1 & 1/2" wide, there should be enough room for support and your drawer.
Anyway, that's my routine.

Ideally make the rail of the cabinet where the shelf will be. Then you can still dado the shelf in.
Larry ,
On this particular application you could make plywood ends as normal then put the frame and panel end on , you can screw them from the inside . This way you dado as always .
It sounds like this cabinet is not butted to other base or wall cabs is that correct ? If it does butt I make them 26" deep so the countertop will die before the edge , really looks deliberate and finished .

Dusty,
I want to avoid the plywood sides due to thickness. I am replacing a 30 inch range with this cabinet. There is a door opening to the dining room on the end (right of cabinet) so I only have a few inches to work with and the cabinet face frame will have to be about 32 1/2 to fit the oven. The face frame railes width will be 1 5/8 so there will be very little tolerance for the thick walls even if I go with 1/2 plywood. It is still an option but there will be very little overlap of the face frame.
I like the idea of making the cabinet deeper. There will be a base cabinet to the left of this cabinet 24 inches deep.
Thanks,
Larry
