how does one determine the length of the rail prior to coping???? I’m practicing with my new Leigh dovetail jig and have produced a nice little box about the size of a shoebox. I’d like to make a top with rail and stile frame.

Hi Mike ,
Usually the rail length = overall frame width minus stiles width plus the tongue or tenon length = rail length .
Example , if the frame is 12" wide and the stiles are 2" each and the tenon or tongue is say 1/2" deep on each side then the rail length = 9"
R = frame - stiles plus tenon length
I hope this helps dusty
sounds fairly straight forward, I appreciate the help - thanks
MIKE
dusty got the calculation right but the formula he typed is missing one key component:Rail length = Total door width - 2X Stile width + 2X tenon length

Hi Charles ,
The explantion I thought was clear above the formula I offered .
thanks for keeping us in line .

dusty, (and Mike),
Keep in mind that the effective width of the stiles is reduced by any molding that is stuck on its edge. If you are coping around this mold (or mitering it away), the length of the cope (the width of the mold) must be added to the distance between tenons on the rails. That is, the distance between tenons is measured between the fillets of the moldings on the stiles. That's at the front side of the tenon. Distance between tenons on the back side of the rail is as you describe, outside-all width of the door minus the combined width of the stiles.
