are there any 15 inch planers that are not so noisy?
Thanks LMC

Dear Louca,
I understand that "indexed" heads such as offered by "Byrd" and others are quieter.
Best,
John
Is there a quiet planer ? Kind of like asking for a quiet Harley. ;-)

I have a Rockwell 22-401 (13" HD planer) and it is much quieter than any of the 4 post planers I've been around. I think that many of the older planers run quieter. Some even came with kits to reduce noise. Curtains, etc.
Hello Lou,
I work in a facility where the wood shop foreman just purchased a Grizzly 20" Industrial planer with the spiral cutter head. While demonstrating it the other day, our safety supervisor pulled out his sound level meter and measured the machine sound levels [while planing a 10" wide red oak board]. The noise from the planer was a low level buzzing sound that our safety manager said would not require hearing protection! I was standing next to the machine while it was running [no wood being planed], and I could not tell it was on! The safety dude, with the sound level meter, explained that the dust collector was louder than the planer.

PS I just looked up the model, it is a G0544. I am not a Grizzly fan, in fact the only Grizzly product I ever purchased was a real piece of junk. I must admit, my first impressions of this machine were positive. The planed oak board was as smooth as glass.
