I have some quilted maple that I want to finish and to really bring out the figure. I seem to have read in FW not too long ago that shellac under an oil finish (or the reverse?….) is a good choice. Anybody remember that article or have some direct experience on this? Thanks!

Bill, I have seen many articles discussing this technique, although I don't have any of them handy to refer you to. I have many times finished figured woods by using oil first (BLO or Danish oil), allowed to dry a few days, then finishing with shellac or lacquer (or both). I then like to rub out and wax the final finish. I love the way this "pops" the figure of the wood.
