We have a pile of veneer that is between 40 – 50 years old. Got it when my husband’s father died twenty years ago. Large pieces but buckled. Has been stored flat in our garage which is not temperature controlled .
My husband is ready to take it to the dump. My question is whether it is still useful to someone. It seems a shame to trash it if it is still good and someone could use it. There are some large pieces which I believe are bookend matches (if that is the correct term).
We are in the Baltimore area and I’d be delighted to give it to someone who could use it.
Thanks and hurry….my husband is in cleaning the garage mode! Has already made three dump runs.

It might be useful. Often the stuff can be straightened and laid. I'm just bringing this back to the top to increase the chances of someone from near you seeing it and having a use for it. Slainte, RJ.
I can't really use the veneer right now, but I'll give a hundred dollars if you can get my sweetie in a garage-cleaning mode!, ROFL, or at least his "junk room!"

I can't use it right now either, but it would be a shame to let it go without even asking what kind of wood it is.
My husband says it is mostly mahogany crotch, if this means anything to you.
Oh, yes. Very meaningful. It means I'm about to cry because I'm unemployed and 1500 miles away.
I'd say give it a few more days. Now that we know what kind of wood it is, I predict you'll see a little more interest.
Uncledunc,
Maybe I can keep him from doing another dump run for a couple of days. I had hoped someone would be able to say "keep" or "kindling". My husband makes furniture but has never used veneer. This came from his surgeon father who made reproduction highboys and hunt boards which is why we have this pile of stuff. He also made clocks so we have a box of clock works (no faces) so who knows if this stuff would be useful to anybody. I suppose it would be but how to find that person gets so darn labor intensive it is really easier to take it to the dump.
Thanks again for your help, Mala
OK, how does one go about getting some of the veneer from you? How would yo want to handle it?, I mean the packing, shipping and costs? I'm ready and willing for at least some of it. I would love to have some crotch mahogony veneer. TIA
Another thought: If he's not thrown it out yet, you could post a message in the "Classifieds" section here at Knots, and just say it's available for the cost of shipping from Baltimore.

Iwould be interested in buying the whole lot of it from you just give me a price and the cost of shipping,
Thanks and I will await your response
Doug
Please tell me your husband hasn't thrown any of that veneer away yet. I wish i lived closer so i could come by and pick some up. please tell your husband he is NUTS for wanting to throw that stuff out.
Dear Andrew and all the others who responded to my original e-mail.
We went to the garage and sorted the veneer. Now my husband thinks he was NUTS to think about taking it to the dump. There are fifteen 3 x 6ft sheets of crotch mahogany, 20 sheets about the same size of something we can't identify that are all slices from the same tree, 20 large sheets of regular mahogany, a fair amount of burl, some rosewood. And on and on. All in all, a LOT of veneer.
So we will do some research and decide what we want to do with it.
Thanks for your help.

HOORAY!!!! Have fun!forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Keep uson your decision. I think there are several of us who would beg to purchase and pay for shipping.
Thanks!

Hi Michael,
We looked on line at new veneer which seemed to be in much better shape, very similar and not terribly expensive. So we are back to thinking the veneer may be so dried out, it is not worth much. We looked at http://www.herzogveneer.com I think. Actually we looked on e-bay and this was a company that advertised new veneer there. They had crotch mahogany and we could tell from the pictures that it was flatter and not as buckled as what we have. Ours seemed quite dry and brittle.

I wrote several days ago about the veneer and I would be interested in purchasing it if you are looking to get rid of it.
Just let me know
Thanks
Doug
Mala, have you check with some cabinet-makers and other woodworkers in your area?
If you end up deciding to sell it here at Knots, I'll get in line.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
Mala, perhaps you could tell us approximate measurements (width/length) of the sheets, if they're fairly uniform. With that info, it would be possible to help you figure out how hard (or easy, hopefully) it would be to ship.

Mala Burt,
After reading the whole thread, I would be very interested in buying the whole package from you. I could use it on an armoire I'm building now. Would anyone like to view my drawings?
Scott
Thanks for your interest and everybody's help. We have found someone local to take the veneer.
