I have some Purple Heart lumber and some of it is a deep beautiful purple. Some is almost brown, how do I bring out the purple color? What can I do, I have tried putting it in the sun and that has little effect. thanks donny

I use a lot of Purpleheart..
I will just lightly sand the surface and let it sit a day or two..
YES sometimes it will stay brown in places.. I cut that one into different sizes to avoid the brown wood.
Hi, WillGeorge,
I have just entered into this one - what do you use the purpleheart for? I have only ever experienced a small piece of it, and I was told it had excellent water resistance (I was using it for a rather exposed part of the deck of my boat). What sort of things do you make? Piccies would be nice......

I am in Iraq, some of the guys on here might remember me for a June question about a table saw. Any way I made some pistol handles for My General. At that time I only had a skill saw a file and sand paper. I have found another piece and was going to make a flag shaddow box. The piece I have now is a not very purple mostly brown. I know that sanding it makes it a dark brown and some of it will turn purple, I though it might be possible to fume it with some type chemical to change the color. Update to those that remember, the table saw arrived six months and eight days after I ordered. I apprecaite the help you guys have given. I will leave Iraq the middle of December and all is well. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers. donny
Thanks for that, Donny.
Keep your bloody head down, mate! What we get on the news sounds bloody horrible!
Take care, and stay in touch with us - at least you can understand the level of insanity that we all suffer with!

I have never tried it but I have read someplace that putting on ArmorAll protectant (UV protection I guess?) will help keep it purple. Most of the things I have made are still purple..?? I must be doing something right.. Most is just finished with shellac, Danish oil, or Lacquer
I haven't had a problem with it staying purple but some of the boards i have just never turn purple. I know your mom was very proud of the lovely bench. Purple heart is a beautiful wood. I have built a boots and rifle display for a fallen soldier also while i have been here from purple heart, I will try to attach photos. I appreciate the concern of each of you during my deployment. It is almost over and i honestly have enjoyed my time here. We produced 103 desk for the Iraqi children and numerious other project on post for fellow soldiers as well as computer desk for the schools. Thanks again, donny
